Putaruru Golf Club Report for Insertion in the South Waikato News Wednesday 13 April 2005.

Ladies Report
The Tuesday Ladies played a L.G.U. competition with the four best players on nett qualifying to represent the club at Pirongia in the District Championship on the 9th of May.

In the Silver division Irene McIvor had 72 nett and Denise Hunt 74.  In the Bronze 1 division Heather Howard had 70, Anne Kensington and Brenda Buckeridge 72, and in the Bronze 2 division Jeanette Burton 77 on count back from Bev Macartney, Audrey Mathis 78.  Raewyn Hoole had the only two on the 10th.

The National Team is Heather Howard, Anne Kensington, Irene McIvor and Brenda Buckeridge.

The 9 holer's played a putting competition with Lynette Bennett having the least putts of 17, Wanda Lyon 18 and Joy Mc Donnell 19 on count back.

Due to the Ladies tournament on Thursday, there was no Vets Day [but Les OíLeary won the wooden spoon at Walton].  Vets will resume again this week.

The Ladies Teams Tournament was very successful with many clubs in the Waikato and Bay of Plenty represented (even though our caterer Gladys ended up in hospital the night before, thank goodness she is now on the mend).

The winners with 118 points were "Tirau Teasers" comprising Betty Crawford, Claire Campbell, Ruth Tye and Shirley Kinnaird, with 115 "Flo Joes" Florence Jellard, Irene McIvor, Margaret Karl and Joan Spargo, and on 113 "Tahuna Lady Lambs" Kaye Foote, Margaret Pond, Debbie Carney, Judy McKenzie.

The nearest the pins - 3rd hole Elaine Oppert (Tokoroa), 8th hole Claire Campbell (Tirau), 10th hole Jean Holster (Tokoroa).

It certainly has been a very busy golfing week for some, as our Wills Cup Team played Walton at Cambridge on Friday. Walton scored 54Ĺ to Putaruru's 53Ĺ so there were some very close games.

After 2 rounds Tirau is leading with 120Ĺ, Tokoroa 120, Walton 112 and Putaruru 106.

Men's Report
Congratulations to John Mulholland with his decisive and crushing defeat of Ron Taylor in the final of the Bradshaw Cup.  Actually it was a lot closer than that!  Under a lot of pressure with other distractions on the course, Ron was 2 down at the turn but came back to be all square after the 16th.  Now, the play of the last 2 holes is a mystery, the drinks cart may have driven past the group at this point, but something happened because Ron finished bogie, double bogie to Johnís par finish to lose 2 down.  Anyway it was a good old fashioned piece of dramatic match play fit for the final.

The rest of the Saturday results saw some sizzling sights and some good golf scores as well.  Winning division 1 was Ian Worth with 43 points, 2nd Ross Jellard 42, 3rd Murray Hamilton 41, Mike Karl and Terry Garnett 40 and John Bryant 39.  Brad Karl won division 2 with 45 points despite no points on the 18th (learning that you donít get cute with tight pin placements!), and breaking his driver after an almighty drive off 15 or 16 (the shaft disintegrated).  Second was His Worship the Mayor Neil Sinclair on 40, 3rd Ted Ward 39, 4th Duncan Gallagher 38, and Tony Muller and Frank Jamieson on 37.  There was a group of 5 that teed off late and held up prize giving, and THAT was the reason why people stayed later than usual on Saturday for prize giving!

Anyway I finish with the wooden spoon day results from Thursday.  John Lamb and Ron Hunt should be very thankful to Les OíLeary, all had 24 points at Walton, but alas, Les won the blessed spoon coming home with only 8 points to Ron and Johnís 12 point efforts.  Winning the day was Lesís good and supportive friend Russell Burman on 43, 2nd old identity Colin Wohard 42, 3rd Lesís other good mate Tony Edgar 40, 4th Phillip Kensington 39, and Butch Hamilton and John Wood on 38.

Coming up Ö
This weekend sees a scramble on Saturday and a nine hole open scramble with a 12.00 pm start on Anzac Monday. Tomorrow is our Putaruru Super Liquor Mid Week $10 Open Tournament Ö Good golfing from Captain Ding!
