Putaruru Golf Club Report for Insertion in the South Waikato News Wednesday 22 June 2005.

Men's Report
We had a small field to play the Saturday scramble.  Terry Garnett won the only division with 41 points, (a pretty solid sort of a round.)  Second was David Hoyte with a scruffy 39, 3rd Stephen Thorby 38, showing last week’s good round was no fluke.  4th equal were Paul Graham, Peter Young and John Mulholland all with 37.  Twos were scored by Terry Garnett and Ron Taylor on the 8th, and Ross Jellard on the 3rd

And then a strange phenomenon took place at the 19th where for the 8th, 9th or 10th time the Prebble Cup (symbol of Waikato Golf supremacy) was celebrated yet again, when will we get tired of this?!!

Now here is something that is not widely known.  Back in the olden days, when a prominent South Waikato identity from Putaruru was president of the Waikato Golf Association, the rules of the Cup were changed after a Prebble Cup final was decided by a coin toss after the matches were drawn.  The feeling was that for such a prestigious (word of the day) competition, the final only, should be decided by a full replay in the event of a draw, not a play off nor the toss of a coin.  As it turned out this year, it worked out real well for Putaruru as we were very lucky to get into a replay after a very ordinary showing by the boys at Pirongia.

By the way Campbell has just holed his birdie putt to take a 3 shot lead over Tiger Woods after 12!!

Mid Winter Christmas Tournament
Grayburn Ross & Partners sponsor this prestigious tournament.  The cost is $15, and there is an evening roast meal at a modest cost of $12.50.  It will be a great day; the Tui’s weather forecast is for a fine day … yeah right! But fingers will be crossed.  We are hosting some of the Helensville pennants team, along with some of the editorial staff from the Golf Gazette.

Ladies and Vets Report
Tuesday players had another perfect day for golf.  The competitions of the day were Monthly Medal Putting Button and qualifying round for the Alan Hooper Memorial Matchplay Cup.  Best scores in the division 1 were Margaret Ranger 71 nett, 2nd Denise Lindley 73, 3rd Denise Hunt 75.  In division 2 first was Cheryl Jones 69, Heather Howard 71 and Shirley Wood 72. In division 3 Beryl Garnett had a very good round of 68 nett which also won her the Monthly Medal, Margaret Karl 72 and Joan Spargo 74.

The final of the Waikato Pennants was played at Hamilton Golf Club on Mon 13th and the Putaruru team of Irene McIvor, Florence Jellard, Rachel Young and Anne Kensington did the club proud by finishing 3rd overall. Congratulations go out to Tirau who came home the winners by one point from Waikare.

Vets on Thursday saw Stu Kensington come in with a fine 43 points Colin Hamilton 40 on count back from Ross Jellard.

In the Ladies scramble Betty Swanson had 38, Heather Howard 36 on count back from Cheryl Jones.

On Thursday 23rd June the Putaruru Vets, winners of 2005 Waikato Pennants, cordially invite all club players from the Waikato to join them in a mixed open day at Putaruru from 9.30 am.  The entry Fee is a staggering $8.

Coming up …
We have the Grayburn Ross & Partners sponsored Mid Winter Open Tournament on Saturday.  And we continue the Lithgow rounds the following Saturday.  Now, we also have 30 or so players going to Poi Poi Aria for the next Wooden Spoon day, there is still plenty of space, so contact Ross Jellard or myself … Good golfing from Captain Ding!
