Putaruru Golf Club Report for Insertion in the South Waikato News Wednesday 7 December 2005.

Men's Report
Captain Ding was delighted in the turnout for the penultimate Ham n Chicken tournament last Saturday.  Heather Howard was the toast of the ladies with a nett 64 (89 off the bat.)  Butch Hamilton best scored in division 1 with a nett 67, runner up M Donaldson from Lakeview 68, while Ted Ward topped division 2 with nett 65, runner up Doug Worth 66.

We had more than a few visitors from Tokoroa, Waiotapu, Lakeview and Omanu.  And they were all very pleased with the course and the hospitality … some even featuring in the prizes.  The stableford winners were; Division 1 - Gary Mitchell 41 (Omanu), Vic O’Rourke, Mark Spitz (Waiotapu, and not the Olympic swimmer), Ian Worth 39, Murray Hamilton, A Stevens & M Loveridge (Omanu), John Mulholland and Greg Worth 38.  In division 2 - Paul Graham 42, Dugald Hollamby, Dieter Dresher, John Mowat 40, Mark Cross 38, Duncan Gallagher 37, Tony Edgar, Gary Urbahn and Tony Muller 36.  There were far too many twos to mention here.

Hard luck tails, check out the spectacular bruising Captain Ding scored when a flushly hit 4 iron rebounded squarely off a tree trunk to hit him on the shoulder, a photo is on the website!  I mean he bruises like a peach at the best of times!  Poor old Hooky, took far too much ribbing for his bad round and the fact he had more shots than Heather!

Finally, The President was gave Captain Ding a serve for scoring 9 points in the last 3 holes for a total of 34 (phew), but then had to be reminded that 2 points in the last 3 holes for a total of 42, was good enough to miss out on the ham, and land him only pig flavour chicken in the form of a very tasty bacon as runner up!  We did however team up to win the beer!

Grayburn Ross Twilight
These longer daylight saving evenings, spent dawdling round with ale in hand, good company and 9 holes of golf are great.  And the welcoming aroma of the hospitality of the bar and the kitchen finish the evening off in fine fashion.

The business house competition has 2 rounds to go, the Famous 5 are still in front on 18.0, the MacDaddies have moved into second place with 14.5 and Go Whitey  are third with 12.5.  Koro’s Krew and the Stranglers have 9.0, the Rum Brothers 8.5.  But none of this is as important as Ding’s Mob staying ahead of Cambo’s Crew … half a point in it!

The individual honours went to Deb Worth 22, Jenny Smith 20 and Jenny Clothier 19.  In the golfers division Vance Carson stunned with 25 points, Chris Bates 24, Adam Sadler and Sean Samkin 21, and Neville Dugan and David O’Brien 20.  Tim McIvor stormed round with 26 points, Jeza O’Rourke 24, Ray Jackson 23, Paul Strange, Greg Burnett and Chris Edsall 22.

Finally, you have to know the universe is cataclysmically in danger when Burns is the only golfer (??!!) to score a two on the night.

Membership Drive
You can play over the summer for just $100, but did you know that last year, our membership went up by 17 members or 9% … that’s huge.  And we are still growing.  The course is in great nick, and there’s a good feel to the place right now … come and enjoy.

Coming up …
On Thursday we have the Grayburn Ross Twilight and on Saturday, a scramble.  The first round of the summer cup is on the 17th which is also the “Last chance Ham n Chicken Tournament” … Good golfing and good luck from Captain Ding!
