Putaruru Golf Club Report for Insertion in the South Waikato News Wednesday 17 May 2006.

Men's Report
Putaruru has made the final of the Prebble for the second year running in the face of insurmountable odds.  Played at Waikare on Sunday, they banned motorised carts for the weekend, which was fair enough due to the weather.  That hobbled one of our key players and possibly could have thrown our team into disarray.  But when Waikare allowed Tolich Trophy players to play using carts on the day, it is fair to say that we were less than amused.  The ineptitude at this crucial stage of the premier Waikato competition leads Captain Ding to question whether they should host such an event.

But Waikare’s fubar aside, Putaruru won 7 to 5 over a tenacious challenge put up by Whangamata.  It’s crucial to be up in the foursomes, and we were up 3/1.  The singles honours were shared 4 all, with a Maurice Tricker bomb from 25 feet to win on the 18th securing what would have been an otherwise tight outcome.  The other single winners were Ross Jellard, Terry Garnett and Barry Wallace.  Well done team.

We will play Tahuna in the final on the 29th, at a venue still to be announced.

The wooden spoon was played yesterday at Mangakino.  By the time you read this, the holder will be nursing a headache for a variety of reasons, but you will have to wait until next week to find out.  Who was it out of the 35 or so players?  And what was their score, remember the record is 13 points held by an infamous Tokoroa identity.

The TTT semi finals were played on Saturday.  Terry Garnett and Eric Hill swamped Mark Lawrence and Garry Campbell 7/5, while Paul Graham and Brian Curd held out a determined effort by Dieter Drescher and Greg Worth.  Combination was the key, Brian Curd had 35 points along with Paul’s 39, compare that to 40 and 39 points scored by Dieter and Greg respectively.

So we come to the scramble results for Saturday.  Division one was headed by Prebble cup team mates in first, second and third on 40 points.  Ted Ward won on count back from Terry Garnett and Ross Jellard.  4th was Greg Worth on count back from Vic O’Rourke, John Wood, Ron Taylor and Paul Graham all on 39.

The division 2 winners were Eric Hill 42, Dieter Drescher 40, Rex Fisher 39, Brett Worth 38, Gary Urbahn 37 and Brian Curd 35.

Two’s were scored by Gary Urbahn on the 13th, Ian and Greg Worth on the 10th.

Finally, the finalists for the TTT are Terry Garnett and Eric Hill playing Paul Graham and Brian Curd; while in the flight, Steve Thorby and Ross Higginson will play Ross Jellard and Rex Fisher.  Good luck to all.

The first round of the Patrons Trophy was up for grabs on Tuesday with Denise Hunt taking the lead with a nett 70 followed by Neroli Fisher 72 and Heather Howard 73.  Division 2 was headed by Joan Spargo 82, Jeanette Burton 84, and Bev Macartney 86.  Twos were scored by Denise Hunt and Margaret Ranger on the 8th hole.

The Nine Holers played the 3rd round of the Sue Bunt Salver, Lynette Bennett leading the way with a nett 37, Dulcie McLean 41, and Ethne Dodd 44.

Friday is the penultimate round of the 9 Hole Pennants.  Our team is currently in third place, and will play Ngaruawahia 1 at Te Awamutu.  Good Luck Ladies!

Coming up …
Thursday is the Putaruru Super Liquor mini Tournament and Vets day.  Saturday has the TTT finals, a $5 scramble, plus qualifying for the Lithgow Trophy.  And on Sunday we have the Fire Brigade Open Tournament … Good luck and good golfing!
