Putaruru Golf Club Report for Insertion in “This Week” Thursday 6 July 2006.

Men's Report
On Thursday, an intrepid band of troops headed to Arikikapakapa in Rotorua.  Last month, it started with 4 in the group, and this has now grown to 8!  Terry Garnett shot a blistering 77 for 42 points, but was out gunned by “That Guy” shooting a personal best 83 for 45 points.  Captain Ding partnering That Guy played a supportive role, ensuring the match was all square going down the 18th.  But outstanding course management and deft play exacted a well earned win to That Guy piggy backing Captain Ding.

The Firestone mini tournament on Saturday was a stupendous success with an outstanding turnout for this time of year.  There were 10 visitors from Matamata who thoroughly enjoyed their visit, giving a total of 51 in the field.  Matamata were extremely complimentary of the course set up and condition, you know we are very fortunate to play this track day in day out.

The final of the Lithgow trophy was postponed due to the rigours of this latest bout of the bot!  The flu accounted for no less than 3 notable absentees, who probably caught it from each other, but were very conspicuous by their non-attendance.  Things did not “jell” for these 3 “hooked” on this “diet!”

Sizzling his way to an early lead in the Stratson Cup was Butch Hamilton.  Butch obviously enjoying his new intermediate handicap ended +6 on bogey and leads by 2 from Richie Brown on +4, Tali Mulafia and Barry Wallace are 1 back on +3.

The shock of the day was that there was no hole in ones!  But the news of a good golfer having an air shot certainly set the club rooms a buzz, by George!  When you have the shanks, you will get empathy, but an air shot in certain circumstances is just straight out funny!  But the last laugh was that this person still featured in the prize list, by George!

The ladies nett winner was Cheryl Jones 69, and the stableford winner was Denise Lindley 32.

The division 1 nett winner was Butch Hamilton 65, runner up Paul Graham 70.  The gross winner was Tali Mulafia 81, and the stableford winner was Ian Taylor (Matamata) 39, 2nd Richard Wharehoka 36, Ian Worth & Vic O’Rourke 35, Captain Ding, B Wilson (Mata.) and Alan Taverner (Mata.) 34 and John Mulholland 33.

The division 2 nett winner was Richie Brown 68, runner up Garry Campbell 71.  The gross winner was Barry Wallace 86, and the stableford winner was Lance Hay 38, Peter Young and Eric Hill 37, John Mathis, Ted Ward and Andrew Sadler 36, Ross Higginson 35 and David Hoyte 34.

Two’s were scored by Tali Mulafia on the 3rd and Ian Worth on the 10th.

Now we haven’t updated the shootout at all this year, so, the current leader at this point is Ross Jellard sitting on a 3 round nett total of 198, John Mulholland is second on 200 and Dieter Drescher and Barry Wallace are on 201.  Captain Ding has scraped into 17th on the list with 208.  We have a record 42 trying to contest the top 18 spots.

Ladies Report
Fine sunny weather brought a good muster of ladies out to play the third round of the Uden and Lithgow Trophies on Tuesday.  Anne Kensington was the winner of the Uden Trophy (3) with a 69 nett, and she was closely followed by Cheryl Jones 70 on count back from Jenny Smith.

The winner of the Lithgow (3) was Heather Edgar also 69 nett, 2nd Daryl Mills 77 and 3rd Jeanette Burton 78.

The 9 Holers played Putting, round 4; Beryl Garnett was first on the day with 18 putts, 2nd Dulcie McLean 18 and 3rd Margaret Dillon 21.

Jenny Smith scored the only two of the day on the 3rd hole.

Conditions remained fine for the Vets Thursday scramble which was won by Butch Hamilton with 40 points followed by John Mathis 39 and Ross Jellard 38.  The Ladies scramble was won by Cheryl Jones 42, Margaret Ranger 41, and 3rd Denise Hunt on count back from Audrey Mathis.

Coming up …
Thursday is vets.  This Saturday is the second round of the Stratson bogey competition … Good luck and good golfing!
