Putaruru Golf Club Report for Insertion in the South Waikato News Wednesday 19 July 2006.

Men's Report
The wooden spoon trip to Waiotapu Valley (in Reporoa!) was a spectacular success, most likely because Captain Ding had 28 points and didn’t win the spoon.  What a picturesque course setting, well worth the effort of a visit or two.  Butch Hamilton blazed a commendable 39 to win the day with Les O’Leary and Tony Muller 38, and John Mulholland 36.

Of the 27 to make the trip, 8 had the tormenting sweats going into prize giving.  Captain Ding was more than a little concerned, facing great helpings of humble pie, if indeed, Hell had frozen over and he won the spoon!

The prestigious honour of winning the spoon went to Wayne Mudford on count back!  Ron Taylor for the small mercies of the almighty was spared the rod, but only just, as they both scored 26 points.  John Wood on 27 was also relieved as were the 5 players on 28, trusting that Captain Ding was right, and that 28 points was plenty!

On Saturday the Watson Plate mixed Canadian foursomes was played.  Special mention and thanks to Cheryl Jones for her effort in rounding up a good muster of ladies for the day.

The winners were Butch & Vere Hamilton with 63 nett, Vic O’Rourke & Cheryl Jones 65.5, Ron & Denise Hunt 66.5, Don & Alison Riley 67, and Hooky & Heather Howard 68.5.

In the men's division the winners were Brian Curd & Ross Higginson 64, Tommy Houston & Maurice Tricker 67, Richie Brown & Ron Taylor 70, David Hoyte & Adam Sadler 71, and Mike & Brad Karl 71.5.

Two’s were scored by Don & Alison Riley, and Tommy Houston and Maurice Tricker, both on the 8th.

Ladies Report
It was all go on Tuesday with the Ladies playing several competitions.  The winner of the Monthly Medal was Anne Kensington with a very creditable 66 nett.  LGU winners were; Silver, Alison Riley 69, Denise Hunt 74, Irene McIvor 75;  Bronze 1 winner Margaret Ranger 70, Jenny Smith 72 on count back from Heather Howard; Bronze 2 winner Anne Kensington 66, Brenda Buckeridge 69 and Bev Macartney 72.

The putting buttons 0-30 was won by Michelle Thorby with 29 putts, handicaps 31-54 went to Brenda Buckeridge with 30 putts, and Dulcie McLean won for the 9 holers with 14 putts.  Two’s were scored by Alison Riley and Irene McIvor.

Congratulations to our Wills Cup team who took out the Zone final from Tirau by 2 points only, thanks to an eagle eyed Cambridge player.  The team will now go on to the Final on August 25th.
