Putaruru Golf Club Report for Insertion in the South Waikato News Wednesday 6 September 2006.

Men's Report
On Saturday the annual Putaruru Maori Golf Tournament was played with a field of 79 showing up to compete.  The day is also special as there is the presentation of the Geoff Himiona Memorial Trophy for the best local golfer on the day.  The winner was none other than our own Chris McKillop with a sparkling nett 64 for the day off a round of 82 gross.  To our friend Geoff, we are truly blessed to remember you on this day once a year as there are many rich memories that always bring a smile … rest in peace our friend.

The ladies nett winner was Ani Bahler 72, gross winner Tema Tapu 94 (both from Stewart Alexander), and the stableford winner Melva Mackey 34 from Mangakino.

The division 1, the nett winner was Ma Petero (Ngaruawahia) 68, runner up Tali Mulafia 69.  Ken Manuel won the gross with 76, runner up Gary Bennett (Cambridge) on count back.  The stableford winner was Campbell Till (Te Kowhai) 39 on count back from Kori McAllister (Kawhia) and Atu Teao (Stewart Alexander).

In division 2, the nett winner was Chris McKillop 64, runner up Brian Curd 67.  Gross winner Ted Ward 83, runner Spotty McCarthy 84.  Stableford winner Gary Petley (Tokoroa) 41, and Peter Keegan (Te Kowhai) and Tommy Houston, both 40.  Full results will be on the website.

The club championships start for the men on the 16th.  However, there will be a few matches played this Saturday in conjunction with the Firestone tournament, as this takes account of the fact that there are more than 16 entries in the juniors and the intermediates.  The handicaps and divisions are based on handicaps as they stood on Monday the 4th of September, hence the early cut off.  Captain Ding will phone all those with matches this Saturday.

Finally, I heard a whisper; well actually it was a guest book entry on the website that suggested PK was simply outnumbered in the final of the Presidents … two burglars to one!  Well that would be about right, but still no word from “food bill” Samkin on this yet!

Ladies Report
Spring weather on Tuesday brought the ladies out in force to contest the Gold Medal, Consolation Medal and Putting Button.  Heather Howard has taken out the Gold Medal for 2006, while Anne Kensington won Division 1 Putting Button with a very good 29 putts, and Maureen Shanly has the Division 2 Putting Button with 35 Putts.  The final of the 9 Holers Putting was won by Gillian Robbins.

Scramble results for the day; Division 1 winner was Florence Jellard 70 nett, followed by Judy Grey 73, and Heather Howard 74.  Division 2 went to Bev Macartney 72 nett, followed by Vere Hamilton 74 and Heather Edgar 75 on count back.

The 9 Hole scramble was won by Gillian Robbins, from Lynette Bennett on count back from Cecily Duxfield also on count back.  Gillian Robbins scored the only two of the day.

Next week: September is Championship month and Saturday and Tuesday are the second rounds of qualifying for all Ladies.

Vets Scramble
The men’s Division was won by Ross Jellard 40 points, from Keith Hunt 39 on count back from Hooky Howard.  The Ladies winner was Alison Riley 40, Norine McPherson 36, on count back from Heather Howard.

Twos went to Cheryl Jones, King Shanly and Colin Howard.

Coming up …
Thursday is the Vets; Saturday has the Firestone sponsored $10 Open Mini Tournament … Good luck and good golfing!
