Putaruru Golf Club Report for Insertion in the South Waikato News Wednesday 20 September 2006.

Men's Report
October the 7th, keep this date free, it is the finals of the club champs, and that evening we have a social with Cambridge 7 piece band (Affirmation, led by John Worth) to assuage and celebrate the day, and indeed the season to date.  Social tickets are $35 each or $70 a couple, which include supper.  Tickets are available from Captain Ding and Brett Worth.

But let us pray start with the champs.  The havoc wrought by the intermediate division was an abysmal spluttering effort reeking more of carrion foul deed than golf!  Ron Taylor’s match against young Brad Karl was the only close match with a 2/1 win to Ron.  The rest were lop-sided thrashings meted out with no quarter given.  But, Captain Ding was the second best of the losers going down only 4/2 to Ross Jellard.

In the junior division, there was only one upset with Tony Edgar coming out on top of his match against the young Andrew Muller.  The rest were relatively close matches with all results going to seeding.

The seniors kick off this week, with only top seed Mike Karl with a bye.

The Saturday scramble winners were John Mulholland 44 points, Hooky Howard, Ross Jellard, Ron Taylor and Brad Karl all 39, and Tali Mulafia and Terry Garnett 38.  In division 2 Tony Edgar 43, Mark Lawrence and Sean Samkin 41, Adam Sadler, Stew Kensington and Wayne Mudford 39 and Lance Hay 38.

Two’s were scored by Brad Karl, Rhys Burnett, Mike Karl, Ian Worth, Dieter Drescher, Gary Urbahn and Tommy Houston.

Captain Ding’s final word is that this year’s vintage of sour grape wine will be a good one, aye Neo!

On Sunday, Putaruru along with Taupo, Tokoroa and Tirau were hosted at Mangakino for the Smythe trophy interclub.  Holders of the Smythe Cup, Putaruru came second this year to the host team of Mangakino … well done to Mangakino.  Putaruru however defended successfully the Monterey Cup in its match against Tokoroa.

Ladies Report
The Ladies stroke play champions were decided on Tuesday and congratulations go to Silver winner Denise Hunt, and Florence Jellard, Bronze winner.  These ladies will go forward to the Champion of Champions along with the Bronze runner up Joy Aitchison.  Scramble results for the day were: Silver, Denise Hunt 87, Michelle Thorby 89, and Irene McIvor 90.  Bronze 1 went to Joy Aitchison on count back from Judy Grey with Florence Jellard 3rd. Bronze 2 was won by Daryll Mills, from Brenda Buckeridge on count back to Bev Macartney.  The 9 Hole Scramble was won by Joy McDonnell from Cecily Duxfield with Sue Urban in third place.

Rachel Young scored the only two of the day on the 3rd hole.

Next Week is the second round of the Matchplay Championships, with a scramble for the rest.

Vets
Stew Kensington took out the men’s scramble on Thursday with 39 points, Ross Jellard was close behind on 38 with Dieter Drescher coming in third with 37 points.

The Ladies scramble went to Bev Macartney 40 from Ladies President Cheryl Jones 37, and Florence Jellard surviving on count back to take 3rd place with 36.

The Green keeper must have been in a good mood on Thursday, there were four twos on the day; Ross Jellard, Terry Putt, Gary Urbahn and Terry Garnett.

Coming up …
Thursday is the Super Liquor mid week and Vets; Saturday is the quarter finals of the club champs … Good luck and good golfing!
