Putaruru Golf Club Report for Insertion in “This Week”
Thursday 15 February 2007.

Men’s Report
The season opened in spectacular fashion as 55 players roared out to the club last Saturday, grabbed the year by the throat and set the season off in a blaze of energy reminiscent of a knock out backgammon tournament!  The course was in picture perfect condition, and the club is looking forward to the year with many new faces, and a higher level of competition each week … So “cry havoc and let slip the dogs of war ……”

The days play was mixed foursomes, playing for the Lion Trophy.  Winning the Lion Trophy was Keith Hunt and past club Captain, Camille McAllister, with a winning total of nett 66.5.  Second on the day were Ron and Fern Taylor, Vere and Butch Hamilton 68.5, Don and Alison Riley 69 and Maurice Tricker and Joy Aitchison 69.

In a men’s only division, still playing foursomes, Richard Wharehoka and Paul Graham snuck top honours with a nett 69.5, Terry Garnett and Duncan Gallagher 70, Sean Samkin and Richie Brown 70, Peter Smith and Ross Higginson 72, and Chris McKillop and Lance Hay 72.5.

So now the season moves onto one of our top tournaments for the year, the Super Liquor Open Tournament on Saturday.  With mega-hospitality, a haggle hole, this is one of our tournaments not to be missed.  Tees will be open from 9.30, with a rolling start, until 12.00PM or thereabout.

Now some other snippets, yes whispers that the trees could be going from the middle of March are true, and the earthworks for the club house deck were completed on Sunday.  And keep your ear out for details of Prebble Cup team trials any time from now!  And, yes, the year book is coming!

Grayburn Ross Twilight Zone
82 in the field, and Captain Ding was there playing like a right royal plonker!  14 points was a bit rusty.

Fern Taylor won the ladies with 23 points, Muriel Savage runner up on 18.  In the golfers division, Kyle Savage was first with 24 on count back from Graeme Ormsby, Brendon Hunt, Lance Hay, Vic O’Rourke all 23, and Henry Van Dyk 22.

In the non golfers, Corey Luyton had 24, Nick Foster 23, Smiley Alexander 22, Nick Robben, Kevan Stewart and Grant Kelsen 21 and Lindsay Strange 20.

Firestone Shield Challenge
Four teams came in with 62 points hauls on Thursday.  Coming top of the pile after careful analysis of the count back were the Rum Brothers, followed by Undecided, Sweat Hogs and MacDaddies. Cows and Cats were 5th on 60 on count back from Running Late.

Now the team standings have Running late dropping from first spot to 3rd on 13.5 points.  Taking over the top spot for now are Undecided on 17, Rum Brothers have ramped up to second on 15, MacDaddies 4th on 13, and then Sweat Hogs and Go YT on 7.5 and 7.0 respectively.  The top 5 teams have the serious run on this year’s trophy, but anything can happen with another 4 rounds to go.

And on the most important side bet, The Beavers and DOA are locked in a death struggle tied on 3 points a piece.  Both teams appear to have lost key players for what ever reason, most likely team apathy, but it will take only one throat punch to decided this, Captain Ding thinks!

Coming up …
Thursday has the Super Liquor Midweek, and later that evening is Grayburn Ross Twilight and round 4 of the Firestone Shield Challenge.  Saturday is Putaruru Liquor Open Tournament … Good luck and good golfing!
