Putaruru Golf Club Report for Insertion in “This Week”
Thursday 22 February 2007.

Putaruru Super Liquor Open
A record 80 in the field delighted in the hospitality of Jim Smith and the team from Super Liquor in the annual open tournament on Saturday.  Last year we had 63, and the year before 72.  Captain Ding wonders whether the Beaver victory at twilight over the DOA team had anything to do with this, but he digresses!

The day presented superb golfing conditions, a wee bit windy (thankfully), but the course was in great nick.  The hospitality tent was set up on the 6th tee where the entire field enjoyed the hospitality of Jim, Marie and Sara.  Captain Ding without the pressure of playing took advantage of enjoying a few cool ales whilst munching on a Pokeno bacon sandwich.  He was also able to pass on gems of wisdom to those whose tee shots were somewhat wayward.

Store manager Marie Worth had, again, organised a superlative prize table.  Captain Ding very much appreciates the effort of the team at the Putaruru Super Liquor outlet, thank you, danke schön (German), mange tak (Danish), vinaka vakalevu (Fijian) and gracias (Mexican) again!

Jenny Clothier won the ladies nett with 70, gross winner Jean Waterworth 89, runner up Cheryl Jones 97, and the stableford winners were Florence Jellard 35, Heather Howard 31, and Denise Hunt 29.

The division 1 nett winner was Tali Mulafia 66, runner up John Mulholland 67.  Gross winner Mike Karl 66, runner up Ken Manuel 76.  The stableford winners were King Shanly 42, Brad Karl 41, Ian Cotter, Vic O’Rourke, and Richard Duncum 39, Ian Worth, John Waterworth Snr, Butch Hamilton and John Wood 38.

The division 2 nett winner was Sean Samkin 64, runner up Shayne Hill 70; gross winner Eddie Hata 81, runner up Dieter Drescher 88; Stableford winners Jahrome Brown 41, Steve Thorby and Brett Worth 38, John Waterworth Jnr, Neville Dugan 37, Brett Watene, Warren Craig, Graeme Ormsby, Ross Higginson and David Hoyte 36.  The top non golfers were Paul Wallis and Mark Nicholl.

On Thursday Super Liquor had sponsored our midweek as well, and the nett winners were Norine McPherson 64, Maurice Tricker 66 and J Bunce 65, while the stableford winners were Brenda Buckeridge 40, Butch Hamilton 41 and Don Riley 39.

Firestone Shield Challenge
Four teams came in with maximum 63 point hauls on Thursday.  Coming top of the pile after careful, very careful analysis were the Bionic Beavers, followed by Tirau Earthmovers, MacDaddies and the Rum Brothers;  Undecided were 5th on 62 and Go YT 6th on 60.

The team standings have Rum Brothers on top with 20.5, Undecided 20.0 and MacDaddies 18.5.

Now this little side bet thingie, the butchering Beavers have brutalised the DOA team, breaking the deadlock with their stunning performance on the night.  Has indeed, the throat punch alluded to last week been delivered?  All that Captain Ding knows is that this has been a long week for the DOA team to endure, what with the echoes of the modestly crowing Beavers!

Grayburn Ross Twilight Zone
Another 80 plus field enjoying the shorter evenings smouldering with the indolence of the end of yet another sensually sultry summer’s day.

Muriel Savage won the ladies with 20 points, Fern Taylor 19.  Jahrome Brown won the golfers division with 24 points, Thomas Kaio, Steve Thorby, Allan McCarthy 22, Neville Dugan, Ross Higginson, Brad Karl, Daly Makene, David O’Brien, Massey Rata, Sean Samkin and Ron Taylor 21.

Winning the non golfers division was Marcus McGarvey 24, Ben Cross, Mark Nicholl 23, Greg Burnett, George Dixon Geoff Mossong, Doug Ward 21, Neil Rist and Lindsay Strange 20.

Coming up …
Thursday is Vets, and later that evening is Grayburn Ross Twilight and round 5 of the Firestone Shield Challenge.  Saturday is qualifying for the Bradshaw Cup and round 1 of the Walford Cup, all played on nett.  On the Sunday, Putaruru hosts the first round of the senior pennants playing Raglan … Good luck and good golfing!
