Putaruru Golf Club Report for Insertion in the South Waikato News Wednesday 16 May 2007.

Men's Report
Staggering is the only way to describe the scoring this week.  With greens still recovering from coring, no one actually shot a nett 60 or 61 as Brian Curd and Massey Rata respectively have done over the last 2 weeks.  The best that could be managed was a 66 by Andrew Sadler, which is none to shabby mind you.

In the scramble, Brian Curd won division 1 with 41 points on count back from Ross Jellard 41, Captain Ding and King Shanly 40, Mark Lawrence and visitor to the club, Phil Kensington had 39 and John Mulholland 38.

Old Sad won division 2 with 42 points, Andrew Muller 41, Dieter Drescher 40, Frank Jamieson 38, Roger Clothier and Neville Dugan 37 and Gary Urbahn 36.

Two’s were scored by Roger Clothier, Gary Urbahn and Tony Muller on the10th and Tommy Houston with a chip in on the 13th.

In the shoot out, Shayne Hill sits atop of the leader board with a 3 round nett total of 189, that’s a staggering 27 under par; second is Brian Curd 196, Massey Rata 199, Duncan Gallagher 200 and Captain Ding on 201.  Last years qualifying range was a 3 round total of nett 192 to 203.

Finally from Saturday, the only disappointment was that only one golfer scored a 7 on the 3rd hole, a wee par 3 of 135 metres.  Captain Ding wishes to warmly thank all those who cheered him on in this feat as, yes there were 12 to witness his somewhat fragile play of the hole, and no, Weet Bix have not asked Captain Flounder for his handicap back!

TTT Report
The final of the TTT sees Captain Ding and Duncan Gallagher play Eric Hill and Tony Edgar.

It is probably fair to say that the standard of the golf in the 2 semi finals was somewhat of a challenge.

Eric Hill and Tony Edgar played Ron Taylor and Roger Clothier; Captain Vague cannot tell you too much about the match as he wasn’t in the group other than Eric and Tony won … well done.

The other semi saw Captain Ding and Duncan Gallagher take on Allan Wallace and Tommy Houston.

Now it is fair to say that not one golfer in the Putaruru Golf Club would have put money on Captain Lousy Odds and Duncan making it past the quarters, let alone into the final, especially the two players themselves.

So to the match, well it ended after the lead had been swapped more than a few times on the 18th.

A putting contest was what it came down too, Ding and Duncan 1 up, but Allan Wallace with a reasonable birdie opportunity to take the match down the 19th.  Mister Wallace talked up the chances what he had to do, and then, cool as a cucumber, did it by sinking a beautiful putt of around 16 odd feet.  Captain Flummoxed was very complimentary on this wonderful putt, but there were no hugs or kisses mind, you know, guy stuff!

So with a 15 foot putt, down the slope to a back pin placement, Captain Jammy holed out for his birdie to half the hole and seal the win.

The golf at times was not pretty, but it was a thoroughly absorbing slug fest that ended with 2 birdies on the 18th … is that match play golf or what!

Coming up …
Thursday is the Super Liquor Midweek, while Saturday has the TTT finals, qualifying for the Lithgow Trophy and shootout … Good luck and good golfing!
