Putaruru Golf Club Report for Insertion in the South Waikato News Wednesday 25 July 2007.

Putaruru Super Liquor Tournament
Last month it rained for the Super Liquor midweek, last Thursday it was fine-ish … Last month 14 played in the field, last Thursday we got 39.  This tells us absolutely nothing to do with anything.

Cheryl Jones monstered the Ladies Division with a 69 nett followed by Denise Hunt 71.  The stableford winner was Florence Jellard 38, runner up Alison Riley 32.  One poor lady had just 26 points, but she had to duck off to the Lou, not wanting to feel like a Wally.

To Men’s Division 1 where Ron Taylor won the nett with 66 on count back from John Wood.  The stableford winner was Rhys Burnett 42, followed by Ian Worth 40, Terry Garnett, Butch Hamilton and Allan Wallace 39, and Ross Jellard 38.

Shayne Hill won division 2 with 66 nett, runner up Stew Kensington 69; Stableford winner Don Riley 40, Gary Urbahn 38, Alan Blair 36, Andrew Sadler and Wayne Mudford 35 and Keith Hunt 33.

Florence Jellard got the only two.

Men's Report
Now it pays to be observant, because a concerned golfer a couple of Saturday’s ago was witness to The Concerned Golfer, from Waotu, but no names, twice not making the ladies tee on the 5th hole.  Needless to say, the hole was lost on Bogey, but still no names.  Suffice it to say, it was not Goliath, and was there “Land ahoy-te me matey’s?”

Captain Ding was blown away with the 16 mixed entries in Saturdays Watson Plate Canadian Foursomes.  Thank you to the ladies who fronted.

For some of the teams, the golf was a wee bit of a struggle for the muggles.  But weaving Harry like magic were Steve Thorby and Gloria Osbourne who won with 66 nett, second were John Barr and Glenys Eaton 66 also, and 3 pairings on 69, Mark Nicholl and Lyn Darroch, Ross and Florence Jellard, and Ted and Rosemary Ward.

Don and Alison Riley scored 2 two’s on the 3rd and 8th, while Neville Dugan and Raewyn Hoole scored one two too, also on the 8th.

The men did their own thing as usual on Saturday, with Ron Taylor again in fine form with 44 points, Doug Worth 40, Walter Morgan 39, and Allan McCarthy, Richard Wharehoka, Jahrome Brown and Daley Rata-Makene on 36.

Richard Wharehoka and C. Parker scored the only two’s.

Finally there are 7 matches in the Presidents this Saturday, check the club rooms or website (www.putarurugolfclub.co.nz) for the draw.

The Matchplay Cup qualifying was run in conjunction with the LGU Day.  Only 10 ladies qualified which was quite disappointing.  In the silver division Denise Hunt came in with a 73 nett, Jenny Kelsen 75 and Irene McIvor 78.  In Bronze 1 Cheryl Jones came in with a 70 nett, Florence Jellard 75, Norine McPherson 76 on count back from Judy Grey.  In Bronze 2 Heather Edgar had a 73 nett, Vere Hamilton 75, and Brenda Buckeridge 77.  THE LGU was taken out by Cheryl Jones on her 60th birthday – well done Cheryl.

The 9 hole ladies played qualifying for the Beryl Garnett Matchplay.  Gillian Robbins was top qualifier on 39, 2nd Dulcie McLean 40 and 3rd Lynette Bennett on 42.

Results from last Thursday, Men; 1st John Wood 42, 2nd Don Riley 40 and 3rd Stew Kensington 39.  Cheryl Jones took out the ladies on 39 followed by Denise hunt 37 and Norine McPherson 34.

Coming up …
Thursday has Vets, and on Saturday we have the 3rd round of the Stratson Cup and the first round of the Presidents … Good luck and good golfing!
