Putaruru Golf Club Report for Insertion in the South Waikato News Wednesday 19 September 2006.

Men's Report
In slightly torrential conditions at Taupo on Sunday, Putaruru travelled to the Taupo Golf Club along with Tokoroa, Tirau, and Mangakino to contest the Smythe Trophy, which was held by Mangakino.

Putaruru won the Smythe Trophy interclub in the atrocious conditions ahead of second placed Taupo by 21 shots.

The first round of the club champs saw some extraordinary results.  For example, David Hoyte beat Peter Smith 5/3; King Shanly took 20 holes before losing to top seed John Barr; Phil Kensington required birdies on 17 and 18 to pip Walter Morgan at the post 1 up.

Further, John Mulholland fired a 76 salvo to scuttle the aspirations of Massey Rata 2/1; the first round match between last years intermediate finalists saw a reversal of last years result where Richard Wharehoka came out ahead of Terry Garnett 2/1.

In the Junior matches, Daley Rata-Makene and Adam Sadler both shot 88’s but Daley got there 2/1; Hooky Howard could not repeat Thursday’s top form, and lost to Shayne Hill 4/3; Those that know the new Land Transport advertisement that has got Ford drivers so upset will see a similarity to this … Top seed and Ford enthusiast Roger Clothier lost control and rolled several times before ending up a wreck to giant killer Lindsay Siegel 5/4; And finally, David Hoyte’s win … astonishing really!

The scramble results from Saturday saw John Mulholland first with 45 points, King Shanly 43, Ross Jellard 42, Brett Makene 41, Allan Wallace 40, Phil Kensington, Ron Taylor, Butch Hamilton, Brian Curd and Massy Rata all 39.

In division 2 Shayne Hill won with 42, Neville Dugan and Lindsay Siegel 41, Daley Rata-Makene and Warren Long 40, Adam Sadler 39, Dieter Drescher, Stew Kensington, Peter Rennie and that man, David Hoyte all 38.

Two’s were scored by King Shanly, that guy David Hoyte, Stew Kensington, Neville Dugan and Shayne Hill.

Vets Scramble
The results from last Thursday’s scramble were in the men’s division 1st Hooky Howard 45 points, Stew Kensington 39 and Keith Hunt 37.  Vere Hamilton came in 1st for the ladies on 40 followed by Bev Macartney 38 on count back from Heather Howard.
