Putaruru Golf Club Report for Insertion in “This Week”
Thursday 27 September 2007.

Men's Report
This Week we have the sublime to the ridiculous in the weekend matches of the club champs, and in some cases, horrendously dog ugly is too kind a description.  And we have the Super Liquor Midweek results.

Club Champs
The intermediate match of the round was between Butch Hamilton and Richard Wharehoka where this battle ended on the 21st, Butch shot a 75 to Richard’s 78, which should be good enough on any day, but the match finished all square, both players ending their rounds with birdies on the 18th, no mean feat.  The result was a win to Richard Wharehoka, and the Hard Luck Award going to Butch Hamilton, because he won the days scramble, but not what really mattered … the match … c'est la vie!

In other matches, Ross Jellard beat John Mulholland 1 up, both players shooting unflattering 86’s.  Alan Wallace knocked out the top qualifier John Barr on the 14th, a good old fashion 6/4 spanking.  And the sublime to the ridiculous came from Ron Taylor and Phil Kensington, both players going out in 37’s, then coming home with 46 and 45 respectively.  Ron Taylor capitalised on a wearying Phil Kensington to win the last 2 holes for a 1 up win.

In the only senior match played, Rhys Burnett limped out of the champs losing to John Anderson 1 down.

In the Juniors, Daley Rata-Makene beat Lindsay Siegel 3/2, Wayne Mudford beat Brett Makene 4/2 and Jahrome Brown beat Shayne Hill 3/2.

In the match between David Hoyte and Dieter Drescher, it was a case of Jekyll and Hyde.  Dieter Drescher cruised out in 40 off the stick, 24 points and 4 up at the turn.  And after David Hoyte scored 11 on the 12th, it looked like the fat lady had cleared her throat, and was about to yodel.  But in the come back of the century, David won 5 out of the last 6 holes, and against all odds and predictions, procured an unlikely victory 1 up.  Captain Ding is flummoxed!

Doug Worth produced one of his better performances beating Peter Rennie 5/3 in the Junior B division.

The scramble results saw Butch Hamilton with 43 points, Alan Wallace and Maurice Tricker 41, Richard Wharehoka 40, Ron Taylor 38 and Mark Nichol 37.

The division 2 winner was Doug Worth 44, Wayne Mudford and Jahrome Brown 43, Brad Gallagher and David Hoyte 40, and Hooky Howard 39.

Two’s were scored by Ron Taylor, Mark Nichol, Ian Worth, John Barr and Wayne Mudford.

Putaruru Super Liquor Midweek
This was played last Thursday, with Florence Jellard winning the ladies nett with 70, runner up Cheryl Jones 73.  Ted Ward won division 1 firing a nett 64, runner up Bruce Oxenham 67.  And in division 2 Andrew Sadler won with a nett 65, runner up David Hoyte 70.

The stableford winners were Bronwyn Verner 36 points, runner up Brenda Buckeridge 28.  In division 1, Ross Jellard won with 41 points on count back from John Barr, Alan Wallace and Ian Worth 38.  And in division 2, Hooky Howard 41, Dieter Drescher and Gary Urbahn 37, and Keith Hunt 34.

Two’s were scored by John Barr on the 18th, Ian Christie, Kevin Verner and Dieter Drescher on the 3rd and Ross Jellard on the 8th.

Finally, there are no ladies tees stories because Captain Ding was away for the weekend.  But worth mentioning from a couple of weeks ago is the wooden spoon back to back winner, Russell Burman.  The spooner’s went away to Morrinsville where Russell continued his form from Golf Pacifica (Kati Kati) and won the spoon comprehensively on 24 points.  In the sweaty butt cracks division were Don Riley, Tony Muller and one other who cant be named all waiting nervously on 28 points.

Champs Semi Final Draw
In the Seniors, Mike Karl plays the winner out of Greg Worth and Brad Karl, and Mark Nichol plays John Anderson.

In the Intermediates, Alan Wallace plays Ross Jellard and Richard Wharehoka plays Ron Taylor.

In the Juniors, Daley Rata-Makene plays Wayne Mudford, and that man David Hoyte plays Jahrome Brown.

In the Junior B’s, Allan McCarthy plays David Motutere, and Doug Worth plays Warren Long.

Ladies Report
23 eighteen holers and 10 nine holers played a par bogey scramble last Tuesday.  Weather was reasonable with only one heavy shower that lasted for 10 minutes.  The course is playing very well.

Results are as follows, 0-30 division Lyn Darroch +2 on count back from Michelle Thorby followed by Cheryl Jones -1 on count back from Jenny Smith.  31-54 division, Jenny Clothier and Joan Spargo both had +2, Marie Way was all square and Bev Macartney -1.  In the 9 holers Gillian Robbins was +1, Dulcie McLean, Lynette Bennett and Dorothy Bartlett were all -2.

An invitation is extended to any ladies who are interested in learning to play golf.  Introductory sessions will be held on the 9th and 16th of October at the golf course, starting at 10 am.  If you are interested in having gentle exercise, fresh air, fun and social contact with other ladies, please contact Denise Hunt (883 3273 or 021 287 8606) or Jenny Clothier (883 8207).
